1. Online Scams
Before you order anything online always make sure that you're dealing with a reputable company. There have been companies that have taken credit card orders only to disappear a few days later. If you purchase an item with a credit card then you're partially covered. Knowing that, never pay by check, money order, wire transfer or Western Union. Deal with all online companies-unless they're a well-known brand name-as if they were scams. It will just help you to be cautious before purchasing.





2. Cheap Quality Platinum and Gold
If you're buying a ring in person, know that just because a ring looks like gold or platinum doesn't mean it really is. Sure, it's a ring. It's very likely not neither plastic nor an optical illusion. But even a gold band doesn't have to be 100% real gold to be called pure gold. Worse yet, many rings are simply gold plated or coated. These rings are less expensive but they are more susceptible to wear. A jeweler should always provide full disclosure-some will even allow you to take the ring to get professionally appraised. Always deal with a reputable jeweler who is established and who has plenty of references.





3. Overseas Jewelers
While some claim there are savings to be found overseas, you must also order with extreme caution when dealing with vendors outside the United States. There's little recourse if a deal is shady since the vendor is so far away and under a different government. If the company uses an online account like Pay Pal then at least that's one good sign since Pay Pal is a worldwide company that can be addressed in the case of abuse. However, it's best to limit your services to U.S. vendors, and if possible, to local stores where you can touch and investigate the ring in person.
